Sardar Ali Mohammad Mahar is a former chief minister of Sindh.[1] He is from Mahar family. Mahar family is the most respectable and royal family of Ghotki. The tribe claims decent from Mahar, who was a Bhatti Rajput.
The Mahar family figures prominently in the race in Ghotki. Its members have worked hard to cobble together a group that would jockey for a place in the future parliament. Besides fielding candidates on a National Assembly seat and five provincial seats, the family has also placed candidates in Sukkur and Shikarpur districts.
Ghotki and Khan Garh Mahar talukas, is viewed by the Mahar clan as its safest National Assembly constituency. Both the size of its tribe and the track record of its public services are impressive as far as this constituency is concerned. During his tenure as a provincial chief minister, Ali Mohammad Khan Mahar also ensured that development work was carried out in the area. Hence, though he is contesting this seat as an independent candidate, he appears set to win. In 2002 also, Mahar won from this constituency as an independent candidate after returning the PPP ticket.
